The storage rules that matter abroad
From the Wegovy patient leaflet and Novo Nordisk's UK guidance:
- Fridge (2 to 8°C): the normal home for pens, until the expiry date.
- Room temperature (up to 30°C): a Wegovy pen can be kept unrefrigerated for up to 28 days. After that, discard it.
- Never freeze. Frozen semaglutide is ruined semaglutide, even after thawing.
- Keep the cap on. Unlike Mounjaro's carton, the Wegovy pen cap is the light protection. Cap on whenever the pen is not in your hand.
Those 28 days comfortably cover almost any holiday. A fortnight in the Med needs nothing more exotic than an insulated case and a bit of common sense about direct sunlight.

Flying with Wegovy: airport security, done right
- Hand luggage, always. Hold temperatures can drop below freezing. A frozen pen is finished. Cabin bag only.
- Labelled packaging wins arguments. Keep pens in the pharmacy-labelled box. A named, labelled prescription medicine clears UK security in seconds; loose pens invite the full bag search.
- Get a travel letter. Ask your prescriber or pharmacy for a letter confirming the medicine, dose and needles. Rarely checked, invaluable when it is, especially outside the UK.
- Needles travel fine in hand luggage when accompanying an injectable medicine. Pack a travel sharps container so you are not hunting for disposal abroad.
- Cool packs: frozen gel packs accompanying essential medicine are generally permitted, but rules vary slightly by airport. An insulated (unfrozen) medical wallet sidesteps the debate entirely for trips within the 28-day window.
Travel insurance: what you must declare
The pattern that voids policies: someone loses weight on Wegovy, feels healthier than they have in years, answers "no" to medical history questions. Then has a claim refused for non-disclosure. Do not let that be you:
- Declare every diagnosed condition, past and present: obesity itself where asked, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, heart disease, high cholesterol. "Managed" is not "never had".
- Answer medication questions honestly. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine. If the form asks about regular or recent medication, it means this too.
- Recent dose or medicine changes sometimes need declaring within a policy's "change in health" clause. A quick call to your insurer before departure is free.
- GHIC for EU trips (apply free at gov.uk). State healthcare cover, but never a substitute for insurance with repatriation.
- Medication replacement: check whether your policy covers lost or spoiled medicines. A replacement Wegovy pen is a £150-£300 problem without it.
Time zones and your injection day
Wegovy is weekly, so jet lag barely matters. Inject at whatever local hour suits you. If a dose is missed entirely: take it within 5 days; after that, skip and resume your normal schedule. Never take a double dose.
Many travellers simply inject before departure and let the next dose fall at the destination. If you are switching your injection day permanently after a big time-zone shift, that is fine too. Just keep at least 3 days (72 hours) between doses.

How long can Wegovy stay out of the fridge when travelling? +
Up to 28 days below 30°C. Comfortably covering most holidays. Keep the cap on to protect it from light, never freeze it, and discard it after 28 days unrefrigerated.
Can I take Wegovy pens through airport security? +
Yes. Essential injectable medicines are exempt from the 100 ml liquid rule. Keep pens in their labelled pharmacy box in your hand luggage, and carry a prescriber letter for a friction-free experience.
Do I need to declare Wegovy to my travel insurer? +
Declare the underlying conditions and answer medication questions honestly. Non-disclosure can void the whole policy, even for unrelated claims. The medicine itself rarely needs specific declaration, but your medical history always does.
What if I miss a Wegovy dose while abroad? +
Take it within 5 days; if more than 5 days have passed, skip it and resume your normal day. Keep at least 3 days between any two doses.
Is the Wegovy pill easier to travel with? +
Yes. No fridge, no needles, no sharps container, and no liquid-rule questions at security. It stores at room temperature in its blister pack. The trade-off is the daily fasting routine, which some people find harder on holiday mornings.
