Why Wegovy quietly dehydrates you
Whether it is semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic, the Wegovy pill) or tirzepatide (Mounjaro), the same three forces apply:
- Thirst perception drops along with appetite. Many users report simply never feeling thirsty.
- Less food means less fluid. A meaningful share of daily water intake arrives inside meals.
- Vomiting and diarrhoea (most common after starting or stepping up a dose) actively strip fluid and salts.
The stakes are higher than dry lips: both patient leaflets warn that severe GI fluid loss can cause dehydration and kidney problems. The good news is that prevention is almost embarrassingly simple. It just has to be deliberate, because your body will no longer remind you.
How much to drink
Water is the backbone. Tea and coffee count. Sugar-free squash counts. Alcohol works against you, and big fizzy drinks bloat an already-slow stomach. On the Wegovy pill, keep the dosing rules intact (small sip of water with the tablet, nothing for 30 minutes) then start the day's proper fluids.
Seven habits that work when thirst doesn't
- Wake-up glass. Drink before coffee. Overnight fasting leaves everyone behind; GLP-1 users further behind.
- Visible bottle. On the desk, in sight, within reach. Hydration is an environment problem, not a willpower problem.
- Sips, not pints. Large volumes on a semaglutide-slowed stomach trigger nausea. Frequent small sips win.
- Habit-stacking. Water with every meal, every bathroom break, every time you check your phone (that one alone might do it).
- Dose-day preparation. The 24 to 48 hours after your weekly injection are peak nausea time for many. Start them fully hydrated.
- Fluid-rich foods. Soup, yoghurt, melon, cucumber. Counts towards the total and sits gently.
- Two daily alarms. Mid-morning, mid-afternoon. Unfashionable and extremely effective.
Electrolytes: when and why
Normal eating plus normal fluids covers salts for most people. Add electrolytes (oral rehydration solution is the clinical benchmark) when you have had vomiting or diarrhoea, when standing makes you dizzy despite drinking enough, after heavy sweating, or during early dose increases when food intake is very low.
Contact your pharmacy, GP or NHS 111 urgently if you cannot keep fluids down for 24 hours, you are passing little or very dark urine, you feel faint or confused, or dizziness persists despite fluids and salts. Severe dehydration with a GLP-1 is a kidney-risk situation.
Situations needing extra care
- Heat and travel. The combination of sun, blunted thirst and disrupted routine is the classic trap. Our Wegovy travel guide covers flying, storage and insurance too.
- Exercise, especially as energy returns and training ramps up; replace what you sweat out, with electrolytes for long sessions.
- Very low intake days. The less you eat, the more deliberate drinking must become.
- Illness. Any bug with vomiting or diarrhoea hits harder on a GLP-1; start oral rehydration early and know the "sick day" advice from your prescriber about pausing doses.
Frequently asked questions
How much water should I drink on Wegovy? +
Around 1.5 to 2 litres daily as a baseline, plus roughly 500 ml more for heat, exercise or GI symptoms. Urine colour is the best gauge. Aim for pale straw.
Why don't I feel thirsty on Wegovy? +
GLP-1 medicines blunt thirst signalling alongside hunger. It is common and well reported, which is why scheduled drinking beats waiting for thirst to arrive.
Does this apply to Mounjaro too? +
Yes. Tirzepatide shares the same mechanisms: blunted thirst, less fluid from food, and GI fluid loss. The habits here work identically. See our Mounjaro hydration page for the tirzepatide-focused version.
Do I need electrolyte drinks on Wegovy? +
Not daily. Add them after vomiting or diarrhoea, after heavy sweating, or if dizziness persists despite adequate fluids. Oral rehydration sachets are the clinical standard when depleted.
Can dehydration from Wegovy harm my kidneys? +
Severe or prolonged dehydration (usually from vomiting/diarrhoea) can strain the kidneys, and the Wegovy patient leaflet warns about it. Steady fluids, early electrolytes, and medical advice if you cannot keep fluids down are the safeguards.
